Corroded cistern isolation tap before replacement
PLUMBING NOTICE — 252 WARDELL ROAD RESIDENTS

Defect warning: check your mini taps before they flood

We recently replaced corroded mini isolation taps and hoses in a unit in your building. Yours may be the same. It takes 5 minutes to check — and the inspection is free.

What we found in your building

A mini isolation tap is the small tap on the wall that feeds your toilet, basin, sink or washing machine. A braided flexible hose connects it to the fixture. The taps we removed contained very little brass and had corroded from the inside out until they cracked. Both parts are under full mains pressure 24/7 — when one fails, water keeps flowing until someone turns it off.

Why it happens (galvanic corrosion)

When two different metals are joined and water is present, the weaker metal corrodes to protect the stronger one — a bit like a battery. Copper pipe + low-brass tap + stainless hose + water = the cheap tap body gets eaten first. A WaterMark stamp doesn't prevent this: the metals used, water chemistry and age all matter.

Warning signs

  • White, grey or green crusty build-up
  • Rust-brown stains on the hose braid
  • Pitted or flaking tap body or nut
  • Damp, drips or water marks
  • Frayed, kinked or bulging hose
  • Tap handle stiff or seized

5-minute self-check

You don't need to be a plumber. Here's what to look for in each room — takes about five minutes.

Toilet cistern (Bathroom 1 & 2)

Lift the cistern lid and set it on a towel. Photograph the small tap and hose feeding the fill valve.

Bathroom vanity (Bathroom 1 & 2)

Open the cupboard. Photograph the two wall taps and hoses to the basin mixer.

Kitchen sink

Clear under the sink. Photograph the hot and cold mini taps, hoses and the dishwasher tap.

Laundry

Photograph the taps under the tub and behind the washing machine.

Found a leak?

Turn the mini tap off clockwise if it moves freely — don't force a seized one. Otherwise turn off your unit's main water and call 0419 523 373.
